How to view a 3D model online

No install and no account. The 3D model viewer works out the format itself, so you don't pick one first.

  1. 01

    Drop any 3D file

Drag a model onto the viewer above or click Choose file. The format comes from the extension, or from the file's first bytes when the name has none, so a download called scene still opens. Or open the sample in any of the 10 formats; the FBX one is animated.
  2. 02

    Play, orbit and switch views

Rigged and animated files start their first clip at once. Use the bar under the model to pause, scrub the timeline, change clip or slow it to 0.25×. The toolbar on the left switches between Textured, Clay, Normals and Wireframe, turns on auto-rotate, resets the camera and saves a PNG.
  3. 03

    Read the stats, then convert

The panel lists triangles, vertices, file size, meshes, materials, textures, bones, animations and whether the mesh has a UV map, plus its size in mm, cm or inches. Next steps links to the converters for the format you opened, such as FBX to GLB.

What this online 3D viewer shows you

A turntable is the easy part. These are the checks that tell you a model is ready to hand over, import or print.

Animation playback

Clips stored in GLB, glTF, FBX and DAE files play in the browser with a clip picker, a timeline you can scrub, and 0.25×, 0.5×, 1× and 2× speed. Rest pose shows the model with no clip applied.

Four view modes

Textured shows the file as authored. Clay hides every texture to judge the bare shape. Normals colors each surface by the direction it faces, which makes flipped faces and hard seams stand out. Wireframe shows topology and density.

Model stats

Triangles, vertices, meshes, materials, textures, bones and clips. A character with 40 materials or no UV map is better caught before it reaches Unity.

Real dimensions

Width, depth and height of the bounding box in millimeters, centimeters or inches, with the unit each format is read in shown underneath, so a model exported in the wrong unit stands out.

Textures and side files

Embedded textures load on their own. For an OBJ with its .mtl, a glTF with its .bin, or textures in a folder, select the files together or drop one .zip. Anything referenced but missing is listed by name.

Private by design

The file is parsed by JavaScript in this tab and drawn with WebGL on your own graphics card. It is never uploaded, which matters for client work, NDA parts and paid assets.

Reading the normals view and the stats

In Normals mode the color is the direction a surface faces, relative to the camera: reddish faces point right, greenish faces point up, bluish faces point at you. A smooth model shows soft gradients that shift as you orbit. A hard break in color on a surface that should be smooth means split or badly averaged normals. A face that is flipped inside out turns into a hole, because this view only draws the side a face points to.

The stats count what is in the file, not what you see. Triangles for an STL equal its facets; for a quad-modeled FBX each quad counts as two. Textures counts the image maps the materials use; any image the file references but you didn't supply is named in the amber note under the stats. Bones counts the skeleton's joints. Animations counts clips long enough to play: the one-frame takes some exporters add as a rest pose are left out.

Tips for viewing 3D models online

Do
  • Switch to Clay before judging detail; textures hide lumpy meshes
  • Use Normals to find flipped faces before you print or import
  • Slow a clip to 0.25× and scrub to spot a joint that pops or a hand that clips through the body
  • Drop textures together with an OBJ or glTF, or zip the whole folder
  • Check the bounding box against the unit you expect before sending a model to a slicer
Avoid
  • Expect USDZ animation to play; USDZ files are shown still
  • Read a missing-texture note as a broken file; add the listed images and reopen
  • Assume the triangle count is the final in-game cost; engines split vertices at UV seams

When to use a single-format 3D file viewer instead

This 3D model viewer is the general one: open anything, play it, inspect it. The format pages use the same viewer and add what matters for that format: print sizes and slicer units on the STL viewer and 3MF viewer, CAD tessellation on the STEP viewer, embedded media and versions on the FBX viewer.

If the model needs work rather than a look, shrink a heavy file with the GLB compressor or mesh simplifier, or give a still character a motion with animate 3D model. No model yet? Image to 3D turns a photo into a GLB in the SupaVoxel studio; a free account includes 3 credits.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free 3D model viewer online?

For a quick look with no install, a browser-based 3D model viewer that reads many formats is the most practical. This one opens GLB, glTF, FBX, OBJ, STL, 3MF, PLY, USDZ, DAE and STEP, plays animations, offers clay, normals and wireframe views and lists the stats. It is free, needs no account and never uploads the file.

Can I play animations from an FBX or GLB file?

Yes. When a GLB, glTF, FBX or DAE file carries animation clips, the first one starts playing as soon as the model opens. Pause it, drag the timeline, pick another clip or slow it to a quarter speed. Choose Rest pose to see the model with no clip applied. USDZ animation is not played.

Is my 3D file uploaded to a server?

No. The model is read by JavaScript inside this page and rendered with WebGL on your own device. Nothing is sent anywhere, so you can open unreleased work, client files and paid assets. The only download is the STEP engine (OpenCascade compiled to WebAssembly), fetched the first time you open a STEP file.

How do I view a 3D model online without software?

Use a 3D viewer online: open this page in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and drop the file onto it. Nothing to install, on Windows, macOS, Linux or ChromeOS. Orbit with the left mouse button, zoom with the wheel and pan with the right button; on a phone, one finger orbits and two zoom.

Why does my model show without textures?

The textures are probably separate image files that the model points to by name. The amber note under the stats lists the missing ones. Select those images together with the model, or drop the whole folder as one .zip, and they load. GLB and most FBX files embed their textures and need nothing extra.

What does the normals view mean?

It colors every surface by the direction it faces relative to the camera, instead of by its material: reddish faces point right, greenish up, bluish toward you. Smooth gradients mean clean normals. A sudden color break on a surface that should be smooth points to split normals, and a hole where a face should be means that face is flipped inside out.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 200 MB open. Past that, a browser tab tends to run out of memory, so the 3D model viewer refuses the file instead of freezing. Scans of several million triangles can be slow to orbit on a laptop; the mesh simplifier can reduce them first.

Can I convert the model after viewing it?

Yes. Next steps links to free converters for the format you opened, for example FBX to GLB, OBJ or STL. They run in the browser too, keep textures where the target format can store them, and carry animation clips into GLB.
