How to open a USDZ file online

On an iPhone, iPad or Mac, AR Quick Look opens a .usdz natively. Everywhere else, use this page.

  1. 01

    Drop the .usdz

Drag the file onto the viewer above or click Choose file. A USDZ is an uncompressed zip of USD layers and images; the viewer unpacks it in your browser. Text (USDA) packages open straight away. For binary (USDC) packages, the iPhone default, a small USD engine of about 450 KB downloads the first time. Try a sample loads a test model.
  2. 02

    Inspect it

Orbit, zoom and pan with mouse or touch. Toggle wireframe, clay mode to hide textures, or auto-rotate, reset the view, and save a PNG screenshot.
  3. 03

    Check the numbers

The panel shows triangles, vertices, meshes, materials, textures and file size, plus the bounding box in mm, cm or inches. Next steps links to USDZ to OBJ and USDZ to STL.

What the USDZ file viewer shows

A USDZ viewer is useful when a model was made for Apple AR and you need to check it from a PC, or more closely than Quick Look allows.

Any platform

Windows, Android, Linux and ChromeOS have no built-in USDZ preview. Any modern browser with WebGL does the job here.

Text and binary USD

Packages built on ASCII .usda or binary .usdc layers both open, including Apple's AR Quick Look gallery files and Reality Composer exports.

PBR textures

Base color, normal, roughness, metallic and ambient occlusion maps packed in the USDZ load with the model.

Real-world size

The file's own scale (metersPerUnit) and up axis are honored, so a toy car reads its true size in centimeters, upright.

Polygon check

Wireframe and triangle count show whether a model is light enough for AR. As a rule of thumb, stay around 100,000 triangles or less for smooth placement on a phone.

Private

Object Capture scans of your room, your face or your products stay on your device.

USDZ viewer online: what's supported

USDZ contentSupportedNote
Meshes and transformsYes
USDA (text) layersYes
USDC (binary) layersYesRead with a WebAssembly USD engine, loaded only when needed
Packaged texturesYesBase color, normal, roughness, metallic, AO
metersPerUnit and up axisYesShown at real-world size, upright

Reality Composer behaviors, physics, audioNoGeometry and materials only

The same viewer opens STL, OBJ, FBX, GLB, glTF, 3MF, PLY, DAE and STEP, so a GLB version of the same product opens here too.

USDZ, GLB and where each one works

USDZ is Pixar's Universal Scene Description in a single-file package, chosen by Apple for AR Quick Look in Safari, Messages, Mail and Files. GLB is the web and Android counterpart: Google's Scene Viewer, <model-viewer> and most web 3D sites use it. A product page that offers AR on both platforms usually ships one of each.

If you have a GLB and need the Apple version, GLB to USDZ makes it in your browser. If you have a USDZ and need to print it, USDZ to STL drops the textures and writes millimeters for your slicer. For a full AR workflow, from a photo to a model customers can place in their room, see 3D models for AR.

How this USDZ viewer reads files: text USDA packages go through the three.js USD reader, and binary USDC packages through TinyUSDZ, an open-source USD reader compiled to WebAssembly and downloaded only when a binary file needs it. Your file is never sent anywhere either way. If a file still won't open, you'll see This USDZ couldn't be read. Try re-exporting it from your 3D app. Exporting a GLB from the source app is the reliable fallback.

USDZ viewer tips

Do
  • Check the dimensions match the real object before you publish an AR model
  • Look at the texture count: two or three 2K maps are plenty for AR on a phone
  • Keep a GLB alongside the USDZ for Android and web viewers
  • Convert scans with USDZ to OBJ to edit them in Blender
Avoid
  • Expect skeletal animation, sounds or tap behaviors to play; the model shows in a static pose
  • Rename a .usd or .usda file to .usdz; it must be a real package
  • Ship a 2-million-triangle Object Capture scan to AR without reducing it first
  • Open the page offline the first time you view a binary USDZ; the USD engine has to download once

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a USDZ file on Windows?

Open this page in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and drop the .usdz onto the viewer. It unpacks the file in your browser and shows the model with its packaged textures at real-world size, plus triangle count and dimensions. Windows has no built-in USDZ preview, and you don't need Blender or an Apple device for this.

Does the USDZ viewer work on Android?

Yes, in the browser. Open this page in Chrome on Android, tap Choose file and pick the .usdz from your downloads. You can orbit it with one finger and pinch to zoom. Android's own AR viewer uses GLB, so to place the model in your room on Android, convert it to GLB first.

Can it open USDZ files from an iPhone?

Yes. iPhone Object Capture, Reality Composer and Apple's AR Quick Look gallery files usually use binary USDC inside the package. The viewer reads those with a WebAssembly USD engine of about 450 KB, which downloads the first time you open such a file, and shows them with their textures at their real size.

Is the USDZ viewer free?

Yes, completely, with no account and no watermark. The file is read and rendered on your own device, so there's no server cost involved. Files up to 200 MB open, which covers practically every AR asset.

Is my USDZ uploaded to a server?

No. The package is unzipped and parsed in the page and drawn with WebGL on your graphics card. The USD engine is downloaded to your browser, not your file to a server. That matters for Object Capture scans of your home, your face or prototypes.

Why doesn't my USDZ animation play?

The viewer shows geometry, materials and textures, and draws animated or rigged models in a static pose. Reality Composer behaviors, physics and audio are not supported either. To preview those, use AR Quick Look on an iPhone, iPad or Mac, or Reality Composer itself.

How do I convert USDZ to another format?

Under Next steps you'll find free converters to OBJ and STL. USDZ to OBJ keeps the mesh and UVs for editing in Blender; USDZ to STL writes a millimeter mesh for 3D printing, without textures because STL can't store them. Both run in your browser, like this viewer.
